What a paid reader, a reader and a visitor generate

A paid reader

KB

24 events, 16 reads, 8 writes a month

A reader

KB

15 events, 12 reads, 6 writes a month

A visitor

KB

4 events, 4 reads, 2 writes a month

A return is one visit, ~2 metered views. An anonymous arrival returns less and fires less. Same four meters for all three.

Two meters a site, and every reader, paid reader and visitor is counted on both. Storage only: a second meter on the same view adds no read or write.

An estimate, not a quote. Bring it to the call and we finish it.

Your questions answered

How do the meters add up?
They add. Paid readers, readers, visitors, newsletter subscribers, events, reads, writes and storage past their inclusions, floored at $99. There is no platform fee under it.
Do the rates come down with volume?
Yes, and the bands are on the rate table above. It is the next reader that changes price, not all of them.
Our audience is meant to grow. Does the bill grow with it?
It does, and the number is only worth reading beside two others. Growth is billed by every vendor in this category — inside a quote or as overage — so the question is not whether it moves but what it replaces: the paywall, the identity vendor, the CDP, the behavioural data tool and the experimentation tool arrive as one line here, and each reader band costs less than the one before it. Put the calculator above, with your own volumes in it, next to the quote you already hold. We are the only platform in this category that publishes a rate for you to do that with.
What counts as a monthly active reader?
One signed-in person who did something on one of your titles that month. Counted once across every title. Two devices behind one sign-in is one reader.
What counts as a paid reader?
One reader holding a subscription with you that month, whether or not they visited. A subscriber who signs in counts on both reader meters, their reading counted once; one who never opens the site is on this meter alone. So this count can be larger than your monthly active readers, and usually is.
And a monthly active visitor?
One anonymous device that month. It never mints a reader record and is never merged into one.
And a newsletter subscriber?
One person on a list you send to, opened or not, signed in or not. Counted once across every list and every title: somebody on four of your newsletters is one. They can be a reader and a paid reader too, and then they are on three meters counting three different things.
Are anonymous events billed?
Yes, on the same meters as everything else. The first million of each is included, whoever generated it.
What happens if we have a big month?
The same rates, no surge price, no penalty. A spike lands on the cheapest meters (visitors, events, reads and writes are all cents per thousand), while the two reader meters move only when people sign in, and the paid one only when they subscribe.
What is an event, a read and a write?
An event is something somebody did that you asked us to record. A read is a lookup, usually whether this person has access. A write is a change: a meter ticking up, a subscription starting.
Does adding a title cost more?
One organization, one contract, one bill, however many titles. Only the counts move, and one person across four titles is one reader.
What if we do not want to change our identity provider?
You do not have to. EdgeKit verifies against the one you already run, and it goes title by title: one title can move while another keeps its current sign-in, or none of them do. It also costs less, because you are not buying sign-in you already have. We quote that one.
What about the payment processor we already run?
It stays — bring your own payments. Stripe and Recurly are wired end to end today, and which one you run is configuration, not a different product. Stripe can run as the subscription engine with the charge on your own processor — PayPal, Stripe, Payway, CyberSource, GoCardless, Invoice, Braintree Payments (card, PayPal and Apple Pay) and Braintree Google Pay are supported charge layers. Any other processor is connected by us, at no charge.
What does support look like?
A dedicated Slack or Microsoft Teams support channel for your organization, in the contract.
Who owns the data, and what does leaving cost?
You do, and nothing. Your own database, never pooled, exportable whenever you ask. No export fee here or in the contract.
